Quinting Watch of President's!In 1993 three Swiss engineers fascinated by the world of hands and wheels decided to embark on the most crazy adventure ever seen in the watch making world: to create a completely transparent chronograph. In 1993 in Geneva the company Quinting SA and named it after Rene Quinting, the youngest engineer of the team. The Quinting manufacture searched for solutions from a range of industries, including the automotive, aeronautical and optical fields and after seven years of research and development brought to light the first working prototype of a transparent watch. The innovation was not limited to one part of the watch but applied to the whole mechanism entirely made of sapphire. The first transparent chronograph with sapphire movement was welcomed with great success and honored with the prestigious “Official Prize of the Revue des Montres” in 1999. In these clocks, the goal was to hide the mechanism in such a way that it was not immediately obvious how they actually worked, hence, the mystery. Quinting that developed and patented the first and unique transparent movement made of sapphire belongs to these horological elite. All the parts of the Quinting movement are manufactures exclusively for Quinting and assembled by hand in its manufacture situated in St. Blaise, near Neuchatel in Switzerland. The movement Quinting is made by superposing several thin toothed discs of sapphire previously metallised and given an antireflection coating. It is a very complicated system of perfectly parallel stationary and rotating sapphire layers which are placed at a distance of 0.08 to 0.1 millimeter. The discs that rotate ensure the motion of hands (there is one rotating disc per hand) which are enclosed in the space between sapphire layers. The stationary discs are placed in the movement to hold the assemblage together. Unlike other even the most complicated movements in the world whose toothed wheels are entirely made of metal, the wheels of the Quinting movement are composed of three parts: sapphire, rubber and metal. Each sapphire disc has toothed metal rims attached by an ultra-thin band of rubber. The Quinting movement cannot be considered as purely mechanical or purely quartz movement. It combines quartz regulated electronics and mechanical parts driven by a battery and motors hidden from view in the external rim of the case. The Quinting movement might be categorized as a mechanical one electronically driven or in other words electro-mechanical. The assembly process which is performed in a dust free room in order to ensure the perfect transparency requires from the watchmakers of Quinting a high degree of competence and 100 percent precision. The point is that sapphire contrary to metal is a nonfusible and nonelastic material. This advanced technique places Quinting watches among the most sophisticated and complex on the market.
